    Des Moines Parks and Recreation Initiates Fishing League Programs

    DES MOINES, IOWA ---- March 31, 2009 --- The City of Des Moines Park and Recreation Department announces its first-ever fishing leagues are forming now and will compete for more than just bragging rights in these spring competitions. All DNR regulations will apply in Panfish and Walleye Fishing Leagues, which will be held for eight weeks from April-June in various metro area lakes.

    Registration runs now through April 16 for the Thursday evening sessions which begin at 6:00 p.m. or later and run until 9:00 p.m.. Adult/youth Panfish League teams that will consist of one adult (19 years of age and over) and a maximum of two youth ages 6 through 18. They will compete April 23 - June 11 for cash winnings including $300 first-place, $200 second-place, and $100 third-place prizes. A registration fee of $75 covers each team and their boat; boat and fishing licenses are required for all team members 14 years of age and over in this weigh and release competition.

    Adult-angler teams of two (ages 18 and over) will compete for a $500 first-place prize and free entry into a statewide tournament featuring some of Iowa's best walleye fishermen (registration value is $240) in the Walleye League, organized in cooperation with the Iowa Organization of Walleye Anglers (I.O.W.A.). The second-place team will take home a $300 cash prize, and thirdplace wins $200 in the measure and release competition. League registration closes April 10 for the competition, which takes place Tuesday evenings, from 6:00 p.m. or later until 10:00 p.m., April 14 - June 2. Registration for a two-person team and boat is $100; boat and fishing licenses are required.
